The Safest Place in London

A Goodreads win: I have always been enthralled with stories and books set in the UK during WWII, particularly London, and when I won this one I was excited to revisit one of my favourite eras. It did not disappoint. Two women, two children sheltering in the same Underground Station during a savage bombing attack. Only one woman and child survived.

The writing was amazing, I could feel the fear of the non-Londoner who had never experienced an air raid before, and I could also feel the calm inevitable acceptance of the old-hand who regretted the necessity of leaving her chip tea behind.

The story that followed was intriguing and enjoyable, I wont give away any spoilers here, but it was a satisfying read.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND READING

My reading time has been severely impacted by the advent of social media. Don't get me wrong, I love Facebook, Instagram, Goodreads and more recently, Litsy. I just find that my time is now spread between them all, so spare time that was previously reserved for reading (early in the morning before I get out of bed, sitting on the train, cooking, during ad breaks etc) is now spent picking up my book, then my phone, then sitting at the computer. Progress and technology are keeping me on my toes.

By the way have you tried Litsy yet? It's my new favourite app. Unfortunately it is only for iOS at the moment, but it shouldn't be long before Android users get a taste of it judging by its popularity.

It is similar to Instagram but totally book focused. I am hooked.

Review: "On Mystic Lake"

Another re-read of one of my old favourites. A little girl who lost her mum in tragic circumstances and now feels like she is disappearing "one finger at a time'. A lovely story which swept me along to the small town of Mystic and characters which I genuinely cared about. The entire book kept me enthralled until the final few pages, which seemed a bit rushed. All in all I enjoyed the adventure.
